France’s 2007 vintage report card was a disappointment, especially Bordeaux. Some of the whites and the sweeter wines from Sauterne are good, but this is definitely a less desirable year for Bordeaux reds. Most red grape varieties, even in the Rhone Valley were unable to ripen because of the summer’s in-climate weather; though, surprisingly Southern Rhone did exceptionally better than the North (Chateauneuf-du-Pape vs Hermitage or blend vs Syrah).
Another European power house flipped the tables and produced an exceptional year. Germany’s Rieslings are amazing, so stock up on German Rieslings when they are released. They are not out yet, but I will keep my eyes and ears open to tell you when they are available. Be sure to learn about German wine labels before you pick up your Riesling, because I know that once the 2007’s are released you will all be making a b-line to purchase some.
