Last minute gift ideas for the wine lover

So, I was scouring the internet for some neat gifts to give yourself or the other wine lover in your life. An aroma kit is a great way to enhance your ability to pick out the scents of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or even Pinot Noir. A company called Wine Awakenings has a series of aroma kits for different grape varieties, including a “Faults” kit. Stepping it up a notch, for the avid international wine buyer, there is a travel case from Wine Cruzer that takes the worry out of sending your priceless bottles into the cargo hold of an airplane. They have cases that will hold 2 to 24 with prices ranging from just under $200.00 to $650.00. Stemware is also a fabulous gift that is a great accompaniment to a bottle of wine. A bottle of ice wine from their favourite winery and a couple of Riedel Ice Wine glasses is simple and thoughtful. Riedel also has a variety of unique decanters that any wine lover would appreciate; my favourite is the Amadeo Black. Finally, a gift of wine will also be welcomed. I recently purchased a case of “The Procrastinator” from Wits end (Chalk Hill). It is made of 100% Cabernet Franc grapes; lots of berries envelop your nose, plus very distinct tobacco and spice that carries you into a smooth, medium to long finish on the palate. This will be a great alternative to a Pinot Noir on Christmas Day.
